BURRIGHT, R. G., P. J. DONOVICK AND E. ZUROMSKI. Septal lesion and experiential influences on saline and saccharin preference-aversion functions. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 12(6) 951-959, 1974. Relatively high (unpalatable) concentrations of saline or saccharin (independent studies) presented in 24 hr choices with water were found to more markedly and persistently suppress the subsequent preference of septal-lesioned rats for lower concentrations when compared with any such shifts in preference displayed by operated-control rats. These data were used to support the notion that the septal region is involved with a comparator mechanism which affects the animal's response to various external and internal cues guiding consumption. In addition, wide individual differences in both groups were presented and discussed to emphasize that future studies should be designed to clarify those uncontrolled genetic and/or early experience variables which must serve, at least in part, to differentially bias the adult animal's consummatory choice behavior.

Refeeding after acute food restriction: differential reduction in preference for ethanol and ethanol-paired flavors in selectively bred rats.

Rats' voluntary ethanol intake varies with dispositional factors and energy status. The joint influences of these were of interest here. We previously reported that rats selectively bred for high voluntary saccharin intake (HiS) consume more ethanol and express more robust conditioning of preference for flavors paired with voluntarily consumed ethanol than do low-saccharin consuming counterpart...

The GABA Antagonist Picrotoxin Attenuates an Ethanol-Induced Taste Aversion in Taste Aversion-Prone Rats

The aversive properties of alcohol can be examined by using ethanol as a conditioning agent in a taste aversion (TA) paradigm. However, there is often variability in how organisms respond to the aversive properties of alcohol. Using a selectively bred line of TA-prone (TAP) rats, the present study sought to determine if antagonizing the GABA receptor complex with picrotoxin could block the acqu...

Effect of Procainization of Ventromedial Nucleus of Hypothalamus on the Feeding Behavior of Rats

Bilateral lesions in the Ventromedial nucleus of hypothalamus (VMH) cause hyperphagia and a preference for high lipid, high carbohydrate diet. Reversible lesion by procaine microinfusion produces a decrease in serum glucose and immunoreactive insulin levels. In the present study the effect of procaine microinfusion on feeding behavior and taste preference was observed. 5 h and 24 h food intake,...

Taste aversion learning and aging: a comparison with the effect of dorsal hippocampal lesions in rats.

The relationship between hippocampal function and aging was explored in Wistar rats using taste aversion learning by comparing the performance of adult dorsal hippocampal lesioned and fifteen-month-old intact rats with that of adult intact rats. In experiment 1 the conditioned blocking phenomenon was absent in the hippocampal and the aging rats. Unlike the adult intact rats, the hippocampal and...

Perirhinal cortex lesions impair context aversion learning.

Rats with perirhinal cortex lesions were compared with sham controls on a conditional discrimination in which saccharin was paired with LiCl in context 1, but paired with saline in context 2. Perirhinal-lesioned rats were slightly slower to acquire the discrimination but reached control levels by the end of acquisition. Both groups showed transfer to familiar tap water, consuming less in contex...
